I'm adventurous, always

And that spills over into everything I do (I'm not reckless, I swear). While there's a structured method to my madness, I enjoy mucking around and finding out. Any digital product humans use should intuitively become second nature like the rest of our habits. For that to happen, every interaction and journey should make sense. The best part? I get to muck around and help decide how these products make sense.

My design approach

Design thinking

Design thinking is a man's second best friend. If you think about it, it's practices help us understand and solve problems in every aspect of life. I use the following as a guiding star...

System's thinking

System's thinking is tracing a problem back to it's root cause(s) instead of only addressing the presenting issue. Put simply: instead of taking pills for your toothache, try brushing your teeth more often and practicing better oral health.

  • Empathy is crucial to a human-centered design process because it allows me to set aside my assumptions about the world and gain real insight into users and their needs.

  • I analyse our observations and synthesise them to define the core problems our team have identified and narrow them down further, to problem statements.

  • With a solid knowledge base from the first two phases, I can now think creatively, explore different perspectives, and find innovative solutions to my problem statement.

  • I aim to identify the best possible solution for each problem found. Producing some inexpensive, scaled-down versions of the product (or specific features found within the product) to investigate the ideas I’ve generated.

  • I rigorously test my prototypes. Although this is the final phase, design thinking is iterative: we often use the results to redefine one or more further problems.

  • A comprehensive design system ensures the product design process operates efficiently, contributing to the ideal product outcome. This is an ongoing journey that develops throughout the product delivery phase.

A little bit about

Andrew de Silva

Born and raised in Sri Lanka, I dreamed of becoming a pilot like most boys. However, things took a different turn after my schooling and I thought Automobile Engineering would be a good 'fix'. I got bored, engineering wasn't for me. I decided to study design at the Academy of Multimedia Design & Technology and fell in love with User Experience design. Apart from all this, what I love the most is traveling / backpacking. I'm always down for an adventure, even if it almost kills me (okay maybe I'm slightly reckless). I've also recently begun dabbling with DJ'ing and my friends seem to enjoy the tunes I play.
